Your GP (local doctor) is often a good place to start
Why do I need a GP?
Based on your needs they can help with
- Treatment including medications
- Referral to the right help/services
- Assessment and planning
If you don’t have a GP, or would like to see someone different, you could ask friends or family, or look at the National Health Services Directory, which provides information about doctors and clinics in your area.
It is helpful to try to see the same GP or clinic, finding someone who gets to know you and your needs, someone you can trust. It can be very hard to retell your story to different doctors. All feedback and important information is sent to this Doctor (letters from the hospital or mental health specialists.)
Worried about the cost?
GPs do assessments for a mental health care plan. Mental health care plans provide a medicare rebate for approved mental health services. (E.g. psychologist, social worker at a reduced rate. Gap payments often apply, so check with the service provider)
The best way to feel better is through:
- Seeking medical help from a GP
- Social supports (family, friends and community)
- Mental health experts
